Master and Wardens' Tour 2019

16 September 2019

On Tuesday 10 September we had our annual Master and Wardens' Tour. This event is an opportunity for the Master and Wardens of the Brewers' Company to visit some of the key places linked to the Company's charitable work.

The day began on the Dame Alice Owen Foundation Estate in Islington, which is a key source of income for the charity that helps it to distribute over £1.8M a year to support Dame Alice Owen's School and educational programmes in Islington. A large redevelopment project is currently being carried out in one of the blocks on the estate and the visiting party was able to see the progress of this. They then moved on to South Mimms, where some land owned by Alderman James Hickson's Charity is being proposed for development to enhance the future income of this charity, which supports the Aldgate and Allhallows Foundation and some almshouses in South Mimms. Fittingly, the next stop was the almshouses themselves, where the Master and Wardens met some of the current residents.

The day concluded with visits to the two schools supported by the Brewers' Company: first Aldenham School in Elstree and then Dame Alice Owen's School in Potters Bar. The Aldenham Foundation consists of Aldenham School, Aldenham Prep School, St Hilda's Prep School and Bluebird Nursery and Aldenham Prep School is in the midst of an exciting redevelopment which the visiting party was able to learn more about. At Dame Alice Owen's the group met some of the School's outstanding students who have achieved fantastic things this year, including two students who have acted in the West End, an international runner, a national judo champion and a Maths Olympiad champion.

We are very grateful to everyone who contributed to making the tour such a success.
