Music Education Islington Providing Opportunities this Summer
08 August 2023
The Clerk was pleased to be able to attend two special events with Music Education Islington (MEI) in July.
On 10 Jul, he enjoyed one of the programme’s End of Term Concerts at Arts and Media School Islington and then, on 17 July, he went along to the MEI New Sounds Festival – a showcase of a range of ensembles, choirs, orchestras and bands led by a group of young event producers.
MEI continues to offer fantastic musical opportunities to students in Islington throughout the summer holidays, with the return of the Music Makers Lab and their Summer Jazz Course. Through this work and much more, MEI seeks to meet its objective to ensure all children develop their music skills regardless of their background or attainment.
“My life has changed so much since taking part in MEI; doing music has changed me as a person. It takes so much effort to play the violin so I have become more hard-working.” – Hussein
“I really loved taking part in MEI’s Music Makers project. It was a great opportunity to meet new people, try a range of different instruments and create music based on our own ideas. We were able to perform five original pieces at our gigs and it was amazing to see how much we were able to achieve in a short amount of time. This experience has helped me to gain confidence as a performer and allowed me to develop my skills as a musician.” – Suraya
“I never played the trombone before and when they let me play it, I was very happy! It means a lot to me. It’s really special to be able to hire my trombone. The music activities have helped me a lot – in school and in life in general. The teachers are very kind and helpful.” – Raffy
MEI is supported by the Brewers’ Company through the Dame Alice Owen Foundation.
