Grants Help University Students
25 January 2023
In January the Brewers’ Company awarded over £3,800 of grants to support university students with their studies.
The EH Thompson Bequest and the Katherine Dames Legacy, two of the charities administered by the Brewers’ Company, award grants to former students of Dame Alice Owen’s School to support their further education. An interview panel, consisting of the Clerk, and the Headteacher and Chair of Governors of Dame Alice Owen’s School, met with applicants recently and were very happy to be able to award grants to help with in a variety of areas which would enhance the students’ experience at university. This year, this included purchasing textbooks, lab equipment and sports kit, as well as funding national and international travel for fieldtrips and work placements, and covering the costs of extra-curricular language lessons.
What was perhaps most striking about the Old Owenians when they were interviewed was how well their time at the School had prepared them for university, both academically and personally. Across the board the applicants came across as confident, self-possessed young people who were already thriving in their further education, which was a delight to see.
