This month Dame Alice Owen’s School was chosen by the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2025 to be the joint Comprehensive School of the Year 2025 (Southeast).

Widely acknowledged as the most authoritative survey of the country’s top schools, the guide places Dame Alice Owen’s School as the highest performing non fully selective school in the country. This is the third time that the School has received a similar honour since 2017. The Sunday Times announced that this award recognises the wonderful educational opportunities offered to the young people as well as the outstanding academic progress that students make.

The Brewers’ Company couldn’t be prouder of its connection with Dame Alice Owen’s School, which reaches all the way back to the School’s founding in 1613 when Dame Alice Owen entrusted the governance of the school that she had established to ‘her friends’ the Brewers of London. Recently the School found a new way to celebrate this special relationship by instigating the Great Owen’s Keg Carry, as Headteacher Hannah Nemko explains:

“Tuesday, 15th October, was a special day in the history of Owen’s as the Senior Team and House Captains, with thanks to McMullen’s, unveiled a new inter-house competition: The Great Owen’s Keg Carry! The aim of the competition was to raise the profile of the house system, creating a buzz for and pride in our houses. The keg race symbolised houses coming together and forming connections across year groups and students from Year 13 literally ‘passed the Keg’, a symbol of our history with and connection to the Worshipful Company of Brewers, to Year 7 to keep the traditions going. A large audience across the year groups turned up to cheer everyone along. The competition was won by Isledon House with a close second place to Clerkenwell House. Hermitage House finished third with Goswell House unfortunately last, and probably hoping to redeem themselves next year. Some of the Brewers were privy to watching a video of the Keg Carry antics when the Advisory Committee came to visit and thought it looked like such a good event that they are hoping to bring it into their own corporate fun day!”
