Celebrating Philanthropy

On 16 March, the Brewers’ Company held one of its most important events of the year – a formal luncheon attended by representatives from many of the organisations and programmes supported by the Dame Alice Owen Foundation, as well as other Brewers’ Company charities.
In attendance were representatives from:
The Dame Alice Owen’s Foundation (DAOF)
The principal objects of the Foundation are to support Dame Alice Owen's School, Potters Bar and educational purposes in Islington.
Music Education Islington (DAOF Beneficiary)
A partnership of leading music education organisations in Islington working to ensure to ensure all children and young people have sustained opportunities to engage in musical learning activities.
Music in Secondary Schools Trust (DAOF Beneficiary)
Provides music lessons to whole year groups of students to enrich lives and improve discipline and commitment to learning.
Guildhall Schools Programmes (DAOF Beneficiary)
An ambitious music initiative aimed at improving the equity and standard of music making for primary school children in Islington.
Upward Bound (DAOF Beneficiary)
Provides a model for breaking the cycle of low aspiration and achievement in Islington. It aims to increase the success of targeted Year 9 and 10 pupils.
Science for Life (DAOF Beneficiary)
Works to develop the science capital of the children in Islington, addressing the problem of limited and imbalanced science aspirations among school children and young people.
Platt Relief-in-Need
Seeks to provide relief for people in the Parish of Aldenham who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress.
James Hickson’s Charity
Supports three almshouses in the Parish of South Mimms for the benefit of elderly residents.
Aldgate & Allhallows Foundation (James Hickson’s Charity Beneficiary)
Benefitting young people from the City of London and London Borough of Tower Hamlets, providing grants for education and educational projects.
Brewers’ Research and Education Fund (BREF)
A major brewing industry grants fund supporting the brewing industry through relevant scientific research and education.
City Beerfest
An annual event supported by Brewers’ Company members which raises funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
Also present at the Luncheon were some of the many of the experts, volunteers and professional advisors whose support is essential to enable the Company to carry out its philanthropic endeavours. The Company remains proud to be able to carry on the legacies of people like Dame Alice Owen, who wanted to educate young people and help improve lives, and extremely grateful to all of the people who give their time, knowledge and expertise to make this possible.
