Brewers Agree £1.35M Charitable Distribtion
12 May 2023
At its meeting on 27 April, the Court of the Brewers’ Company ratified its decision to distribute £1,351,000 from the Dame Alice Owen Foundation in 2023 to support the education of young people.
The grants, which will be distributed at the start of the next academic year in September 2023, will support Dame Alice Owen’s School in Hertfordshire and educational programmes for young people in Islington. These programmes include Music Education Islington, which provides access to instrumental lessons and school-led music centres to children from all backgrounds across the Borough; the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, which provides musical training, Saturday music schools and orchestral opportunities for students; Science for Life, whose ambition is to increase the number of pupils engaging with, and progressing with, science from primary through to post-compulsory levels; and Upward Bound, which seeks to support the ambitions and attainment of a targeted cohort of students through focused curriculum delivery in English and Mathematics, personal development and careers advice.
At a time when the education of our young people is coming under strain due to economic pressures, the Brewers’ Company feels its responsibility for the conscientious management and distribution of its charitable assets more than ever. The Headteacher of Dame Alice Owen’s School, Hannah Nemko, said: “At school, where funding continues to be squeezed from all sides, you have our assurance that we will continue to derive maximum benefit, for the greatest number of students, from every pound that you are able to share with us. We hope that we will be able to continue to make you as proud of your association with us as we are of ours with you.”
