Awarding Grants in December 2023

18 December 2023

This month, several of the Brewers’ Company’s charities awarded grants to individuals to support their cost of living expenses or further education.

The Dame Alice Owen Eleemosynary Charity made grants to six elderly people in need from the parishes of St Mary Islington, St James Clerkenwell ad Christchurch Spitalfields. While Mr Samuel Whitbread’s Trusts gave £1,000 grants to four individuals in need who had previously worked in the brewing industry. Both charities award grants to beneficiaries in two tranches: in July and December each year.

The Clerk, along with the Headteacher of Dame Alice Owen’s School, interviewed four former students of the School who had applied for grants to support their further education from the EH Thompson Bequest. Awards totalling £4,000 were made towards the cost of books, IT equipment and overseas travel. At the same time, awards to support further education were also made from the Katherine Dames Legacy to five former pupils of Dame Alice Owen’s School being raised by single mothers.

Finally, it was with great pleasure that the Headteacher of Dame Alice Owen’s School presented cheques from the Maurice Daphne Bequest to teachers who she had selected for their outstanding service to the School over the last twelve months. It is a reflection of the quality and commitment of the School’s staff that the Headteacher was able to identify no less than nineteen individuals worthy of such an award.
