The Brewers' Lectures 2017

06 March 2017

On Tuesday 28 February, we were delighted to present the Brewers' Lectures 2017 at Dame Alice Owen's and Aldenham Schools. Liveryman, and representative of the Master's brewery, Fergus McMullen kicked off each talk with an introduction to brewing and a brief history of McMullen & Sons, before handing over to some of his team to talk about careers in the industry. Each talk was wrapped up with a tasting of McMullen beer.

McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then has continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The company's brewing history has been protected throughout that time by acquiring and investing in public houses, which provide an exclusive market for McMullen beers. This year's talks focused on the opportunities available in the hospitality side of the industry, with the speakers describing their experiences of working in a McMullen & Sons pub and the various pathways into the industry.

The students at both schools engaged well with the talks, asking a number of insightful questions and we hope that this event has opened their eyes to some of the many career opportunities that are open to them in the brewing industry.
