Congratulations to DAOS: State School of the Year!

30 November 2016

We are delighted to report that Dame Alice Owen’s School (DAOS) was named State Secondary School of the Year in the Sunday Times’ Good School Guide 2017 this weekend. The Brewers’ Company has always been proud to work with and support DAOS, both financially through our charitable foundations, and by providing Liverymen to serve on the governing body, and are over the moon that the excellence that we have been aware of for so long of has been recognised in this way.

The article praises the school on its excellent exam results, dedicated staff and wide range on enrichment activities, noting that “inspectors described Owen’s as “outstanding” in all areas in their report in 2009, praising the school for its “exceptional” commitment to the personal development of both students and staff”. It is particularly noteworthy that DAOS is the first non-grammar school to be awarded this accolade since the inception of the awards in 1999.

Headteacher, Hannah Nemko, is quoted as saying: “I am fortunate to work with outstanding parents and students who are both interested and interesting; supportive trustees and governing body, and the most dedicated staff I have had the good fortune to work with. I look forward to developing all that is good about Dame Alice Owen’s: our unashamedly academic values, our pursuit of excellence in the arts, music and extracurricular opportunities and our emphasis on personal development, social skills and moral values to ensure that every child leaves being the best person that they can be.”

The Brewers’ Company would like to offer very many congratulations to Hannah and all the team at DAOS, the students and parents, as well as Alan Davison who retired as Headteacher at the end of last year. Our close relationship with the school enables us to see the dedication, passion and sheer hard work that goes into making it the exceptional place that it is and the award couldn’t be more richly deserved.
